Hello everyone, hope you are having a nice summer..ours have been so busy!! I just went out to the barn and man I could sure use a little help or suggestions.
Ok to back up a little bit. Don't know if you guys remember me telling you but when Eris was in Labor and had her c-section she broke one of her little horns clear off of her head. Eris was disbudded when she was a baby, but it didn't take and she had two little nubs. She was in so much pain when in labor all the twisting and banging her head, one came clean off. So after the vet did the c-section, while she was still out from the anestesia, he used a disbudding iron on her, and told me that there were some that will stay, becasue they are chunks of bone. The top of her head hasn't looked the same (smile).
Anyway, this was 4 months ago when little Patrick was born. So late this afternoon at some point something happened. I do not know if she got into a head butting contest, or what but now the entire layer of skin and bone (what was left after the disbudding) fell off..I guess I can understand the dead stuff coming off..BUT ..the problem is, one side, there is a hole in the top of her head, and a good size hole, and deep, where the so-called bone was. It is red, with dry blood but I am concerned about infection. To top it off, my son is the one who found it when he went out to feed, and evenidenlty he got a piece of feed stuck in there, and she blew and it blew out..so are we talking sinus cavity here??
Should I give her a shot of antibiotic? All I have at this time is Naxcel, if so how much should I give? I have some of that liquid bandade stuff from the Vet we had gotten for our dog, should I spray some of that on, so the flies dont' get it..should I wrap her head up (not that the wrapping would stay on there or anything) what should I do in the meantime? I can call the vet in the morning, but I want to make sure if I need to do something now, that I do it.
She is not acting weird or anything, my main concern at this time is infection, getting dirt hay or feed in there..and why did this happen or is it suppose to?? I don't think so..
