I use a pair of shears to cut the overgrowth off and then I use a retractable razor to do the fine tuning. I use vetwrap on the fingers of my right hand so I don't cut my fingers. My hands aren't as strong as they used to be so I need something that will cut through the hoof easily. Then I rasp them down smooth. I've never done any damage to the goat's hooves with the knife but during my last trimming session my largest (and up til then calmest) Munchie doe let go a big kick and I stabbed the point of the knife into my left thumb. I'd never cut my left hand before!! That was 2 months ago. I have a nice scar and it's still so tender it feels like the cut is still there and guess what...it's time to trim hooves again! I think I'm going with the glove on my left hand this time!
