Hi Dan,
The others are right about goats being herd animals and needing other goats to be around. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule. I think alot of it plays out to the personality of the goat themselves. Goats can be spoiled very quickly. I'm not sure that you could call it spoiling them rather than setting yourself up for unacceptable behavior by the goat.
We've had goats in the kitchen, goats in the music studio, goats in the bath tub - you name it. And each one of these goats now are lovable and friendly, almost to a fault. They tend to shy away from the rest of the herd when either of are around.
So I'd say you are probably better off getting your new goat another new goat buddy or gal. Then you can spoil both of them :-)
The exception to the rule in our case is that we have a nanny that is a real fighter. She is very lovable to us but not to the other goats - not even her mom. She got her ear bitten off in a goat fight, always tends to beat up on the littler goats and just plainly causes a big nuisance. The flip side is that she produces nice twin kids.
So my solution was simple - separate her from the rest of the herd either in her own pen or on a tangle proof runner. As it turns out, she gravitates towards being out by herself now.
Best regards,
Gary Pfalzbot
