The CUTEST little goat in the world named Webster was waiting in the barn when I got there this morning! My boss got him for a filly who gets nervous when stalled. He'll go down to the track with her when she goes. Problem is, I REALLY don't know much about taking care of goats at all! I had one when I was young, but just remember him pretty much eating whatever was in the yard. We had them at the pumpkin farm where I worked, they had hay, pasture & pellets - but they got the pellets from the kids who paid to go in to feed them - petting zoo situation - they were only there 1 month of the year.
What is okay to feed them? How much?? More importantly, what ISN'T okay to feed them - especially things that you would have around for horses? Can they eat 'cow quality' hay, that horses can't? What is okay for treats? I gave him some hay this morning and a couple of cheese crackers. ;-) My boss said to give him 'a little' sweetfeed, but I just gave him a little handful. HELP! I need some Goats 101 info - don't wanna hurt the little guy. From what I can tell from looking around online, he's a pigmy goat, not REALLY small or 'dwarf' looking though - smaller than your average goat though (black with white ears/nose with black specks).
I'd really appreciate anything I REALLY need to know NOW until I can get some reading done. Thanks so much in advance.
