Deborah,
I am so sorry to hear about your goats. I was doing some research on toxic plants last night as I found some strange weeds growing along our goat fence. I had not seen these weeds around here until this summer, and we are having big time drought problems in SC.
I am not sure where you live, but in times of drought there are several weeds that flourish. One of them is Nightshade, and it looks really pretty when it gets big, but it is highly toxic. It has broad green leaves that are oval shaped, lovely tiny white-yellow flowers and then fruits these beautiful purple berries. I have noticed the mockingbirds and blue jays love the berries, and it does not seem to affect them, but it is toxic to goats and humans. Check your fence lines and see if maybe you have this and they are nibbling it. Also, the stems are a deep pink color, and appear to be tough and somewhat woody in appearance. You can use a broad spectrum herbicide on them, Round-Up or Scythe works really well. These will also kill grass, so use them sparingly according to label directions. I recommend you dig them up, and then spray what is left below the surface of the ground and cover the area back over with dirt that has been moved from the digging. I am a certified outside chemical applicator for the state of SC, and I also have a degree in horticulture. If I can be of any help, let me know.
