Yesterday I picked my goat up from the University Of Georgia Teaching Veterinary Hospital. The dietary recomendations they gave me are as follows: QUOTE;
"To help prevent the occurrence of urinary tract stones in pet goats, they should not be fed grain. They should be allowed free grazing and provided a high quality, free choice grass hay with salt and trace mineral available. Fresh clean water should be provided at all times. Silicates in the diet are not a problem at this time, and usually are found to be so only in the midwest."
They fed him only Timothy hay and Coastal Bermuda hay while he was there, so that's what he is getting here, now anyway. I believe he thought he was going to get his old sweet feed back, as he and his brother go to where the old food containers were sitting and just look at the empty spot. LOL They are eating the Coastal Bermuda, but they think they are missing something. The "Goat Specialist" at UGA also said I can give them a few "Equine Senior" pellets as a treat one time a day. She said no more than 3 or 4 pellets at a time. I saw her give him 1 tiny pellett and he snarfed it up like candy. I sure hope this works. I was really expecting a diet that was very complicated. I figured I would be mixing and all kinds of crazy stuff. Thank heavens it's easy as now this poor baby will have to get "special care" for the rest of his life due to the surgery that he had. His whizzer works fine now, and it doesn't seem to bother him, so that's all that matters. AND he is back to doing his normal goat stuff.
