Hello Deborah,
I'm sorry to hear that you have lost a couple of goats for unknown reasons. I think that is what bothers us the most - losing a goat and not knowing exactly why.
Please do not read this as I think that you are feeding your goats an improper diet, plants, or anything like that. Just a thought that came to mind because we all are bound to lose a few goats here and there over time for unexplicable reasons.
From what I have read in your posts, the specifics and such, I am thinking that it may be some type of toxicity that is creeping up on them. This could be something that began as far back as when the goat(s) were very young.
In researching poisonous plants I have found that some plants that are listed as poisonous will not necessarily be fatal to a goat right away - this of course would lead many owners to think that perhaps the plant is "okay" for the goat to eat.
But in reality, the principle toxins of such plants are stored in the kidney and/or liver and continue to escalate to a fatal level over time. The same could also apply to toxicities from minerals as well.
The other possibility that I thought of is that it may be some form of pneumonia. That is a pretty swift killer and can often go undetected until the last crucial hours.
It might be worth the price of an autopsy and toxicology report to find out exactly what is going on in the herd. I wouldn't think that it would be the West Nile Virus but then again, a few years back none of us really knew anything about West Nile Virus. It seems new bacteria are created everyday.
Please keep us posted on your situation and let us know if there is anything we can do to help. You'll be in our thoughts and prayers.
Best regards,
Gary
