Frank I just noticed no one had answered your post. I am sorry I am not sure what this could be. My first guess would be CL (Caseous Lymphadenitis) but as far as I know it usually appears in the Lymph Nodes, and you are saying it is above the lip. I hope someone else on the list has a little more experience with this and will answer soon. You can read all about CL on the goat world site, just click on Search Goat World and type in CL you will come across a bunch of great articles.

As far as you wearing rubber gloves, that would definatly be a good idea. The contents of the cyst could be highly contageous to both your other goats and humans as well, especially if it is CL. We had a young newbian nanny last year that had a similar lump on her neck. She was one of those that was more a simpathy purchase on my husband's part. She was one of twins and the seller wanted to sell them both as a set, the man who purchased one of the twins did not want the other, and my husband felt bad because she was so upset that he brought her home. That is when we found the lump. Someone told me that if you grabbed hold of the lump and it didn't feel attached, that it was not CL. but still we were not prepaired to drain it etc, and since we had just gotten her, I was not attached yet..so we did wind up selling her. She was sold to someone here in town who still has her, they drained the lump and she is fine.

I would in the meantime though, seperated her from the rest of your herd if you can, just incase. If you can call your vet, that may be a good idea. If it is CL if the contents of the cyst even get on the ground you could be in trouble. I am not trying to scare you, because it may wind up to be nothing, but myself, I would rather be safe than sorry. Burn the gloves and use disposable papertowls etc, and watch it does not get on your shoes if you choose to drain it.

I hope someone answers you soon, and if you do call your vet, please post and let us know the outcome.

Good Luck
~H
