Yesterday evening, I was noticing my pregnant dwarf nanny was staying pretty close to the barn. I put her in the birthing pen with food and water and hay. About 10:30, I went back out and checked on her and sure enough, she was in heavy labor. She was on her side and panting. This was her first kid. She was having problems pushing the head out. When she pushed it out, there were no signs of the front hooves. Then the water bag came out shortly after the head and I didn't think the kid could survive with the head sticking out and that water bag trying to come through too. I went ahead and broke the water bag and felt around in her and found a hoof. The other hoof was bent back down towards the nanny's head. I panicked! Finally I got up the nerves to kinda go in there and re-arrange the hooves and pull the little guy out of there. He was gasping for air. The moma was so relieved. She just layed there. This morning I went and checked on them. They are both fine and dandy. I have helped nannies in birthing goats, but never have I had to go in. That was a horrible/gratifying experience. So many emotions going through you. Just thought I'd share my experience with you.
