Urea is a synth protein, manufactored for ruminant animals--animals with four stomachs---cattle, sheep, goats and the other ungulate animals, except horses--it cheapens up the cost of a high protein ration, thus making the cost of sack feed a little cheaper than an all natural protein--but you get what you pay for--millions have been spent on how ruminants utilize urea and there is still no real agreement--the only hurt is to starve them on it have seen it on a cost basis ration--extreme high fiber level, urea used to kick up the protein level on the feed tag, and the animals being fed the ration can not utilize the feed---sort of like feeding them sawdust--here in the southwest where we have large bands of goats it is all natural protein being fed--lots of cake(cottonseed) or meal in the ration the only time we ever feed a ration with urea is when we get in a money bind on feed costs or when we have a lot of very poor quality forage--urea will make a ruminant eat the boards of a barn--so will it hurt them? No, but would you rather have the real cheese or the imitation? We consider urea just something to sell except in feedlot situations but the is a whole different story on how urea is fed and utilized by the animal. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE MANY HEAD AND YOU ARE NOT IN A CASH BIND---FEED THE REAL STUFF
