It sounds great, going to a show, meeting your local goat mentor, buying a winning doe. Reality is that most goat breeders, and espeically the winning ones are going to be rushed. She more than likely won't have stock for sale right at the show, and anything you talk her into selling is going to be expensive. It would however be a great place to watch the show, see who is winning in your area, and whos goats not only win one class, but who has does who win lots of classes. Not just 1 first and grand, but several 2, 3rd or even 4ths in large classes. Consistency is the key. Have you picked your breed you want? We would all love to help you, what area are you in? Above all visit as many places as you can, until you are comfortable with your pick. Purchase all your stock from the same person, and anything over a year old, make sure you are purchasing them bred. NOTCIE the 12 to 24 month classes and how full these are!!!! If everyone is breeding their does at 7 or 8 months, 70 or 80 pounds than why is this the biggest class, and why aren't all these does in the under 2 milking class? If you bred at 7 months than the doe would be 1 year old exactly when she freshens, putting her into the under 2 year old milking class! Also with breeding season just starting and the 12 to 24 month class so large this makes all the does in this class 12 months old and just bred all the way to 19 months old and just bred. Make sure you learn this lesson very early! Also really look at how much milk is expected to be in the udder to win. Much more than the 12 hours of milk that folks will tell you! vicki
