Personally, I take them off at a young age. Not only can horns be a management problem causing fence breaks, horns being torn off on feeders, and physical damage to other goats, but the risk of accidentially getting a horn in the face would concern me especially with young kids helping around the farm. While they won't do this maliciously, and accidental swipe could mean the loss of an eye. I myself have almost been hurt by large scurs on my pet wethers - accidentailly. They jumped up on their pen to say "hi" and I luckily only ended up with a scratch on my cheek below my eye. Needless to say, as soon as fly season breaks here, scurs are comming off of everyone!

Just my opinion. Its one thing if they're out on the range, and need protection, ect. but when you have small kids (2 legged kind) involved with them, i'd tend to worry. All our 4-h'er have horneless goats as only one or two fairs allows horned goats (and those have to be angoras or cashmeres).

Good Luck!
