LOL! You know how a woman will go out and buy a pacifier or some little trinket upon hearing that she's pregnant...as if it makes the babe all that much more real to her?

Well,uh...that's how I ended up with the small mineral block, teehee... I had to have something in my hand to make it "real" until my kids were ready to come home with us. *(they hadn't been tatoo'ed, disbudded, the buck not wethered yet,) that week's wait was FOREVER!

I learned early on that the feed stores, and unfortunately my beloved vet couldn't answer my dairy goat questions when I got specific. They'd rely on labels and what ever treatments hadn't killed previous goats . "Well, let's see- the label sez it's good for sheep, so sure, it'll work fine for a goat!"... or "Wean at three month's??-What??" Nah, you can wean at one month, and if you want to go to the extra effort- wean after two months." You've been talking to a persnickity breeder haven't you?"(that was the vet!) LOL! I love my vet but he's done been "ruin't" on livestock auction animals, and folks who raise goats without a clue to what they are doing. I'll keep going to him, I just had to realize that he has'nt had much experience with a dairy goat's specific needs. I make him work at an answer now ;o)

Well... some breeders may have a reputation for being "Persnickity" (read: "caring"!) but I have a great respect for those of you who've been down there in the "trenches" and still- you give up your good time to share with the rest of us as we march toward those same "ditches". Eeuww, I don't mean to sound morbid. But then, it can certainly be a lonely and scary night when you've got a sick goat, and the books tell you that a goat can go down real fast... Especially when the only answers you get are, "Wahll, jest watch her and keep her quiet overnight and see whut happens." AARRGGHH!

Isn't it ironic that the stereotype for goats: "eat anything, are mean, stupid, and smell" is about the absolute opposite of truth!!

Sheesh so much to learn, but... so much (((fun))) in return!

Thanks Y'all!
WendyH
