Hi folks,
I probably should not say anything, but every federally recognized holiday - does not matter which one, it always irks me how some get to celebrate the holiday and some don't. With Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, it was recognized because of his work and contribution to civil rights. It's just kind of funny that "we the people" are selected by the type of job we work at. If you work for the federal government, a bank or financial institution, a school, post office, etc., you celebrate the holiday by taking the day off and are usually paid for it. On the other hand, if you are not employed by one of the above, you work and put your money into one of the above mentioned - while they are enjoying the day off and getting paid for it. But the real issue that I think about is that if the holiday is/was important enough to be celebrated in the first place. don't you think the real meaning and spirit of the holiday goes by the wayside if only a select few get to celebrate it? I've talked to quite a few people who are not even sure who Martin Luther King was or what he stood for. It's just one of those things that I get worked up about (probably needlessly). I'll feel this way again come President's Day and Washingtons' Birthday. Anyway, anyone have any opinions on this?
Best regards,
Gary
