It used to be thought that feeding grain would help keep the animal warm, as grain is considered a hot or energy food. But it has been found that the digestion of high fiber food (hay) generates more heat, thus keeping the animal warmer than feeding extra grain. Upping the hay would seem to be the right choice. All of my goats get all the grass hay they want, year round, even though they are on a large pasture with good browse.
