Weaning
Posted by Flo on May 06, 2001 at 08:04:10:
Hi, all. I have FINALLY gotten goats, it's been a week. We have 5 milking does, one buck, and ten babies. The babies were born starting around March 14, March 16, March 24, and April 7. The April 7 TRIO had a dead baby, she was brought back, I am bottle feeding her with milk replacer, all she can eat. she had diarrhea (pale yellow beige stinky) all over the backs of her legs, so the vet told me to cut her back to 10% of her body weight ONCE aday.(she weighs 8 lbs.) She is now only getting 20 oz. PER DAY, and I think it is too little. What should I do? She is starting to nibble hay and grass, but very spoiled on bottle. Next question I have, how to wean the rest of them off their Mamas without causing problems for does, as I am not going to milk them now? How do I dry up the does safely? Please help, you are all my lifeline. Thanks........ Flo
