About the Author
Leukemia is often lumped together with Lymphoma, and the difference between the two should be understood: "The simplest way to think about it is that lymphomas are solid tumors made up of blood cells. This kind of cancer usually causes enlarged lymph nodes or solid masses. Leukemia, on the other hand, is seen in the bloodstream - it's a liquid kind of cancer and it flows and is pumped around with the blood." In researching this specific topic, there is very little information to be found on Goat Leukemia, possibly suggestive that it is rare in goats. There is more information regarding Bovine Leukemia which suggests that although domestic cattle and water buffalo are natural hosts of bovine leukemia virus, many other species can be infected experimentally: rabbits, rats, chickens, pigs, goats, and sheep. I will continue research and share relevant links on this topic as I find them.
Persons that raise goats should always have a necropsy performed when they are uncertain of the cause of death of one or more of their goats. This not only helps research, it determines whether or not there is a concern for the herd of origin.
