I tube fed 2 oz. at 3pm. It was actually very easy & he tolerated it well. I'm getting ready to offer a bottle again, if he refuses it we'll continue the tube feeding. Thanks! Tina

I had a nanny that had 4 kids born this past Monday, and had to tube feed (my first experience at tubing, it really wasn't as bad as I'd always thought) the last smallest kid for 2 days, so don't be afraid to tube your little guy for a while til he starts nursing well on his own. My little girl is doing great, but I have to hold mom to let her nurse now, because mom has started to reject her since she was away from her trying to recooperate from her hard start. Good luck, and I'm sure your little guy will be just fine. |

I gave him goat nutri-drench last evening & this morning to help prevent low blood sugar since he hasn't been eating well. I went to How to tube feed a kid and printed the instructions. I'm going to try to feed him now & will tube feed if he doesn't do well. Thanks! I'll get back to you with how it went. Tina

There are very good very detailed instructions on the Articles page under Kids and Kidding. It is very hard to get the tube into the lungs (REALLY!) especially if you insert it as far as you should. Basically you measure along the outside of the kid by holding the tube against the body from the mouth, along th side of the neck and back to the last rib. Mark the tube where it is at the mouth. Insert it by prying open the mouth with you thumb and insert the tube gently and slowly into the mouth. He may cough a bit as it passes the opening to the trachea. Once you have inserted it to your mark you are ready to attach the syringe and slowly inject the formula. Then pinch off the tube (like folding a hose to stop the flow) and gently withdraw the tube. That's it you're done. I would give only 1.5 to 2 ounces at the most each feeding. Offer the bottle first allowing him to suck then tube feed the rest. The shaking may be from low blood sugar... I gave him another enema the morning, he had another good poop. His temp is 102.8'F rectally. He was shaking a bit earlier, I wrapped him up in blankets and kept him in an area room temp 80'F. I didn't take his temp before that, at the time I didn't have the thermometer close by and wanted to get him warmed up ASAP. His intake is very poor. So far since 6am today he has only taken in 2 oz. at the most. I have a weak kid syringe and am thinking about trying to tube feed him. I haven't done this with a kid yet and am worried the tube may go to the lungs rathers than the stomach. His suck is weak, I've made the hole in the nipple larger so that the formula easily drips out so that he don't have to work as hard. He doesn't choke when sucking. I've also squeeze formula into the back of his mouth trying to get him to swallow. Some has gone down, but he pushes most back out. Do you think its time to try the weak kid syringe? Any instructions on insertion? Thanks so much! Tina

Be sure his temp is at least 100, normal would be closer to 102. And after all these kids have been through he is doing fine. My c sections rarely result in live kids even when the doe has only been in labor for a couple of hours. The kids get a big dose of whatever anesthesia the doe got. Give enemas to both of the kids, I give enemas to all of mine 8 to 12 hours after delivery even if they are pooping. They have had a very hard start. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I have a new baby kid that was born by c-section 4/15/06 late morning. He is not eating as well as his sister. She is taking 2oz. every 2 hrs, he is taking 1/2 oz. to 1oz. every 2 hrs. Last eveing she pooped for the first time. He had not pooped by then and seem the be uncomfortable with a belly ache. I gave him a warm water enema and he had very good results. I was hoping that would help him feel better and he would begin to eat better. He seemed comfortable after that, but still isn't eating well. Any suggestions? Tina
