The B Complex is a good idea, it can't hurt. You are doing pretty much all you can do. Keep him propped up on his chest, not laid on his side, this will help his lungs work better. Sometimes these little underdeveloped ones just don't have the strength to make it over the hump. Love him and make him comfortable. If its meant to be it will be.

I'm getting more worried, he is going backward instead of progressing. He is not able to walk, he was walking before even though it was unsteady. He can't get into the standing position himself, if I stand him up he will stand but falls over easily. I gave him a sq injection of thiamine/ vitamin b today, figured it couldn't hurt. I am changing to the milk replacer formula that you gave me earier.

I am taking him back to the vet friday. Any suggestions till then?

Thanks.

Whey is from milk, it is the left over liquid from cheese making a common ingredient in most powdered milk replacers. I would be willing to bet the loose stools is from the milk replacer. Not a bad milk replacer as powdered ones go though. But I have had better luck and less scours with the homemade one. And with the cultured buttermilk you are getting some good digestive microbes in it as well.

Nothing is more priceless than a good vet! I am blessed with 3 but boy a good vet can sure be a busy vet!

The bag says "All milk protein nursing formula", ingredients listed: dried whey protein concentrate, animal fat, dried whey, dried whey product, dried skimmed milk, coconut oil, lecithin, a long list of vitamins, minerals, etc, and also lists mineral oil.

I'm not sure if whey is another word for wheat or soy. I'll have to look that up.

One of the other boys is having loose stools, started yesterday. I was going to treat him for scours. But now I'm wondering if it is the milk replacer.

I am going to go to the store to get the items you listed to make up my own milk for the babies. I want to give them what is best for them.

My vet is great, I am very fortunate to have her. She takes care of all my animals - goats, horses, ducks, geese, dogs, cats, & guinea pigs. Most vets are not so diverse in the species they are knowledgable about. She is not only their vet, she actually knows what she is doing with them all.

Thank you!

Just keep doing what you are doing, you can't rush this. Try to rush it by pumping him full of stuff and you upset the delicate balance. They don't need the colostrum powder anymore and colostrum is actually a bit laxative. Do check the ingredient list for the milk replacer. Many multi species milk replacers are bad for goats (don't care what the label says!). If it has ANY soy or wheat in it please switch them off of this replacer. Soy is mostly indigestible for kids. Start by mixing the two replacers half and half and gradually increase the new while decreasing the old over 2 to 3 days. Here is a very good homemade milk replacer better than ANY powdered milk replacer:

1 gallon of whole milk (4% from the grocery store
1 can of evaporated milk (not sweetened condensed!)
1 cup of buttermilk

Pour about 1/3 of the gallon of milk out and set aside. Pour the can of condensed milk and 1 cup of buttermilk into the partially emptied gallon and top up with the reserved milk to make a gallon. Mix well.

He is very much like a premie, less developed than his siblings. They probably had the bigger share of placenta, therefore developed more in utero.

I seldom get any live kids from a c section, your vet is to be commended. C section kids have a rough start even before they are born.

I have a 7 day old kid that is weak. He was a quad delivered by c-section on 4/5/06 8pm. When delivered he was weak and required oxygen, the other 3 were stronger. The four boys all came home the next day. They were rejected by their mom and have been being bottle fed with a milk replacer supplement that is for multi-species, including goats. I also add soluble Colostrum power, that is specifically for goats. The colostrum powder includes dried colostum milk, live microorganisms, and vitamins A(5500 II.U) vit. D3 (2750 I.U.) and vit. E (2.75 I.U.). He gets as much as he will drink(usually at least 1 to 2 ounces - it varies) every 2 hours, except at night he goes about 4 hours between feedings. The other 3 boys are growing stronger each day, their suck is strong, they are playful, running & jumping. This little one is strong enough to eat, but his sucking is much weaker than the others. He only sleeps & eats, can stand a little to pee & poo - but then lies down, he is unsteady when standing & falls down easily, he also shakes a little while standing, his poo is mustard yellow, soft but formed little balls - looks normal like the others poo, he pees okay. He is able to hold his head up okay. His cry is weaker than the others. His mucus membranes are moist but a little pale. His pee is light yellow, doesn't look concentrated - seems to be well hydrated.

Any suggestions to help him gain strength? Is there a way to increase calories, without causing digestive upset? Any additional vitamins that can be given to help? Or anything else that may help?

Thanks!
Tina
