Wow...I've had goats for ten years and never heard of pizzle rot. My goat's not on any alfalfa, and only gets a handful of grain, however, the grass has recently started greening up fast and that may have done it. It does sound like my guy may have that. Thanks!!!

Have you seen him urinate? He could have a condition called pizzle rot from too much protein (grain) in his diet making him have more ammonia in his urine and causing sores. Decrease or cut out all grain (wethers only need a handful or so once or twice a day), clean the area well. Be sure he can urinate. Here is a link to an article about pizzle rot and treating it http://kinne.net/pizzle.htm

I have a 5-year-old nubian wether and just noticed that his belly is scabby and looks raw in places - kind of like psorosis. His male part looks kind of swollen too. He has not had alfafa hay and gets a goat feed with grass hay. He was wormed about six weeks ago. I have noticed him rubbing his belly, but I don't see any lice. Is there anything I can do? He seems uncomfortable and I'm worried about calcium in the uretha. Thanks!
