You can check the color of the lower inner eyelids. They should be bright salmon pink. If they are pale pink or white the goat is anemic. You can give Geritol liquid once or twice a day to help rebuild the blood. For the doe give the adult dose, for the kids give 1/2 to 1/3 that dose. Anemia is more often caused by worms than lice. When was the last time you dewormed? What did you use, how was it given and how much was given? Many dewormers need to be given at 2, 3 even 4 times the cattle, horse, or sheep dose to be effective and many dewormers are no longer effective at any dose (Safeguard and Panacur are two of these). Thank you Maggie! You are a life saver! I will check with my feed store and see if they have the CoRal and the other pouron. I have seen lice on humans and this looks nothing like that. Yes, they are tiny brownish or black insects. You mentioned anemia. Is there something that I should do for this too? Is there a precautionary med or something for the anemia? Again, thank you so much! |

She has lice, these are tiny brownish insects. Fleas do not infest goats unless you have a TREMENDOUS flea infestation. You can bathe with dog flea shampoo but a better solution is to use CoRal livestock powder or a Synergized Delice Pouron or Ivermectin pour on. Treat once a week for at least 3 weeks. Treat all of your goats, especially the kids. Lice are often a fact of life with goats, especially in the winter. Don't freak! Lice are species specific, goat lice to not infest humans and vice versa. Lice can cause anemia especially in kids and they sure cause a good deal of itching and suffering. Please help! What do I do about fleas?? I noticed my 2 baby goats scratching quite a bit but couldnt find anything that would cause them to itch. I checked out their Mama and Oh My Goodness...she is infested with fleas. I have heard that I can just give her a bath with flea shampoo that would be used on dogs but I dont know that it would do the trick. Please let me know what I should do. If she has had them for a while, are there side effects from the fleas? Could they cause more problems for her or her babies? |
