Penicillin is not particularly effective for pinkeye. I use the terramycin or triple antibiotic eye ointment 2 to 3 times a day and give oxytetracycline (LA 200, Biomycin 200, or Agrimycin 200) once a day by SQ injection at 1 cc per 30 pounds. Do this daily until the eyes are clear. I have had good luck with just giving the oxytetracycline injections when the goat was impossible to give eye ointment too. Do not treat with the eye ointment and penicillin, or oxytetrcycline injectable and penicllin injectable at the same time, they cancel each other out. Most eye ointments contain oxytetracycline or a related drug that when used with penicllin make both ineffective. Once the eyes turn white it can take 2 to 3 weeks for the eyes to heal. You can usually get the eye ointment and oxytetracycline injectable at most feed stores. All vets have the eye ointment too. Be careful when treating and wash your hands carefully, YOU can get this too. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Hi Dave, I've been researching treatment for pinkeye as we have a doeling that was born with it. I am treating with Terrimycin ointment 3-4x/day in each eye. Some give Bio-Mycin SQ also. good luck |

HiMaggie,Well I guess after all precautions,it still is not enough...We have 2-Does,a wether, and a small Kid all with Pinkeye. The small kid is cleared up for the most part, but the other 3 now have the white cover over their eyes...One of them is the little Doe we just rescued and got to do very well on her own,now this ...They are all to the point that they cannot see where they are going. We have been treating with Pennicilian, but I wondered if there is anything we can get at the feed store to battle this with??? Also we have them sepperated from all the others, and so far it seems there is no others affected. We make sure they have food and water constantly and we watch them closely all the time. Also, could you suggest how long to expect this to run it's coarse ? Thanks Dave PS. I have been reading here and localy,it seems everyone is having to battle this lately... |
