You're right, Maggie. When she died she looked relaxed like she was sleeping, no look of pain on her face, and she actually looked like she was running and jumping the way her legs were positioned...actually like she was hopping over Rainbow Bridge...but my house is so empty and her "presence" is gone...I am sorry about your loss too, somethings just aren't meant to be, sadly. God bless!

This is an update on little Zadie. She passed away this morning. Yesterday she had no appetite, her mom backed away from her when she tried once to nurse, she wouldn't try a bottle. The LA200 was not working so I got Nuflor from my vet but that did nothing. I even used lactated ringers this morning but she was too far gone. Her temp never did straighten out...she was cold even under a light on a heating pad. She fought to make it to day 18...she is sadly missed. I sincerely thank you for your help.

She isn't eating enough to meet her energy needs. You might try starting her on a supplemental bottle (use the recipe found on the Articles page under the heading Kids and Kidding), it would be easier for her than always competing with a much stronger sibling. She can still nurse mom but you can feed her too. Keep her on the LA 200 at 0.5 cc for 10 full days in case she has a systemic infection such as joint ill. This is very common in kids that are colostrum deprived and many don't show much more in the way of symptoms than having chronic respiratory ills, being lethargic (not jumping and playing) and just generally not thriving. I have seen an improvement in just a few days on LA 200 if the problem is joint ill. You must give it once a day (you can give SQ she will deal with it better than going IM) for 10 full days to knock out this kind of systemic infection.

She can catch up and do well if you can get her to the point of developing her own immune system at about 10 weeks. Many kids like this catch up by the time they are 8 months to a year old and are no different from kids that get a good start.

This is the same doeling that had pasty blood tinged poop that finally cleared up after treating with Biosol and Albon. She did have some constipation problems though but an enema took care of that. Yesterday she was trotting a little around in the pasture with mom for the first time away from the barn and actually first tried mouthing hay and leaves (at 15 days of age). She has never shown any interest in nibbling in mom's feed pan. I thought she was definitely improving. Now today when I returned home from a day trip, I found her cold to the touch though it was in the 70's with humidity, mouth cold, and she didn't look like she had eaten much but amazingly she did nurse two short times while I watched. I have her inside under light now, and she is more alert. She had a snuffy nose days ago but I stopped the benadryl because it made her drowsy and lethargic. The snotty nose had disappeared though she breathes a little noisily. She now has a hoarse sound to her cry and her temp after warming was 101.4. I gave .3cc LA200 since she sounds like she might be a little congested. She is 16 days old and half her brother's size and she just isn't thriving. This dam's colostrum was weak like milk, not yellow, rich and thick. I think she didn't receive proper antibodies. I have been giving probios since I started the Biosol and Albon treatment that she completed almost a week ago. I really am wondering if she will ever be normal. Any thoughts?
