It can be very hard to get a kid onto a bottle after they are used to nursing their mom. Be sure the milk is very warm, it should feel almost hot on your wrist. A goats body temperature is quite a bit higher than ours. There is a very good milk replacer recipe on the Articles page under the heading Kids and Kidding. Many instant milk replacers taste pretty bad (nothing like the real thing!) and aren't nearly as good for kids as this homemade recipe. Many kids have been raised on plain whole cow milk too (nearly all milk replacers are MADE from cow's milk, not goats milk!). Canned goats milk is truly awful. If your replacer has soy protein in it it can be especially hard for kids to digest. The sucking on the penis should have you concerned. Try putting some Bitter Apple chewing deterent on the area. You can buy this at most pet stores, it is for keeping dogs and cats from chewing on themselves or on bandages. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic | ||

I have a kid that is 18 days old today. We took him and his twin brother away from mom when he was 6 days old to bottle feed them as pets. The one brother, after 3 days, is taking the bottle fine. The other brother is still only drinking about 3oz. at a sitting 3 times a day. He refuses the bottle after that and then when we put him down he goes right to his brother and suckles on the penis of the brother. Now the brothers penis area is swolen and inflamed. We took the one who in not eating to the vet and the vet said he might be a slow starter but now the suckling on the penis of the other brother has us very concerned. Please help |
