Sandy, Lisa & Maggie- Thank you so much for the info. I've talked to several people about this now and know a bit more about it so I am at ease at little more but still cautious. Thank you for writing. From what I saw on the internet net (worse case scenerio I'm sure)it scared me to death. Thanks a bunch! Cindy

The main thing to watch is the doe's teats, she can get it there (from th kid's lips) and if they become too painful she will be reluctant to nurse the kids. Sore mouth doesn't seem to slow goats down very much, they will eat alittle slower (like you would with a cold sore...) but that's all. Now sheep really suffer and I hear that it can be very painful for people. If a person gets it it is called orf and occurs most often on the hands (from treating the sores on the goats). So if you get a sore that won't heal up and is especially painful, remember to tell the doctor you have been exposed to soremouth (orf) or (s)he won't have any idea what they are looking at. This disease is considered more a nuisance than a real problem and every goat owner will deal with it at some time. Some people use Vitamin E to help heal it up, one of our members swears by Gentian Violet (get this at the drug store). I don't do anything except keep an eye out to be sure everybody is eating. It is caused by a herpes virus, sililar but not the same as cold sores. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I know a lot of people whose goats have had this. It is rare to lose one, that only happens when the sores are so bad they can't nurse or feed. The good news is that once they recover, they should be immune to future outbreaks. I wonder if the same is true for humans? Sandi |

of course you should keep them. this is very normal we all go through it. if you are taking precausions you will all be fine. if it helps i have been raising goats for 10 or so years. when i was first starting i had the same problem and I DID GET IT. I ONLY GOT 1 SMALL SORE ON MY LIP AND I TEATED IT WITH VIT-B AND IT WENT AWAY QUICK. don't panic its okay. just make sure your kids wash there hands and all will be well. trust me you don't want to get rid of them for something like that. this to shall pass. you can also put some vit-b on there lips to help it. I am certain maggie will give you some medic advice that will get you through also. take care and hang in there it will bee fine. we have sore mouth in 10 kids right now. it will pass. |

I'm so upset! My babies have come down with sore mouth. Talked to the vet he said it would just have to run it's course for about 1 month-they could die if it gets severe. I had my kids back there the day I noticed it-they were petting them. Please pray for me that the kids or any of us are not infected. We are taking precaustions changing boots and clothes and wearomg disposable gloves. I just want to die I'm so scared and worried. What will I do if we do get it-I'm freakin' out and so discouraged! Does anyone have any suggestions of whether we should keep them if they survive? Cindy
