You might try giving the kid some probios, any antibiotic treatment can upset the rumen and intestinal microbes to the point of hurting the appetite. Give B Complex too, as this helps encourage appetite. With this kid having been stressed wqorms and coccidia can become a factor so you may want to start a sulfa drug for coccidia and deworm. A bonus is that sulfa drugs can help treat respiratory disease... Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Maggie, Can the Naxcel cause loss of appetite? I've been treating a 3 week old bottle kid for pneumonia, just finished a 5 day course. He's still sounds pretty "wet" and his appetite hasn't really returned. I've been trying to encourage smaller, more frequent feedings, but I can see he's lost quite a bit of weight and is losing ground still. Sandi |

Maggie, I think it is mild pneumonia. He droops his head, but I haven't noticed odd breathing, yet. My local feed store had TYLAN 200, so I'm going to use that and also try your childrens motrin idea. Thanks, again, this is a great service! Kevin |

His temp is just above normal, so he may have a viral or bacterial respiratory infection. The temp could be falling because he hasn't eaten and has low blood sugar. Mix up a batch of Magic (1 part molasses, 1 part vegetable oil and 2 parts Kaor syrup with a bit of warm water to thin it some) and give him 2 to 3 ounces 2 to 3 times a day. I like to use Naxcel (get from a vet) for treating respiratory infections. Give 1 cc per 50 pounds by SQ injection twice a day for 5 days. You can give banamine at 1 cc per 100 pounds once a day for fever and pain relief and this may put him back on feed. If you don't have banamine you can use Liquid Children's Motrin at 1 cc per 10 pounds every 4 to 6 hours for fever and pain relief. Check his breathing, is it faster or more labored than another of tyour goats? DOes he sem to want to stand with his head hanging? A goat that is uncomfortable laying down often has pneumonia and the pressure on his lungs when he lays down causes too much pain. Goats with pneumonia will have labored breathing, will sometimes be raspy, have a fever. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I saw him pee last night and again this morning with no trouble, but I have not seen him poop. I took his temperature and it was 103.8, not too bad. He seemed a little perkier this morning but still didn't want to eat anything. Thanks for the help! Kevin |

Have you seen him urinate? Urinary stones can start out like this. Check around his sheath to see if it is wet (indicating he can at least pee some). Check also for sand like crystals which could be small stones that he has managed to pass. If you determine he may be starting to block but can still pee some you can start him on ammonium chloride, 2 teaspoons dissolved in some water 2 to 3 times a day for a week or so until he is peeing freely again, then give 1 teaspoon once a day (mixed with just alittle grain) to help keep him from blocking again. Also check his lower inner eyelids, they should be bright rosy pink. If they are pale or white he is anemic from worms. A fever may indicate a respiratory infection starting, lots of goats go off feed when they have a respiratory infection. Antibiotic treatment would be indicated here. Check his temp, be sure to insert the thermometer into his rectum 1.5 to 2 inches for an accurate reading. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Hi all, I've got a 1 year old wether that has just started to act odd. He seems mopey, not hungry and slightly bloated. His fur is puffed out like he's cold. I have not taken his temperature yet, but will tonight. He's not acting like he's in pain, just mellow (which is odd for him). I'm hoping it's just indigestion, does anyone have another opinion? Thanks for any input. Kevin |
