Unfortunately, this goat died several minutes ago. Thank you for your prompt replies and for lending your expertise to those of us who need it. |

The initial seizure she was unable to stand, was twitching with legs straight out and muscles very rigid, eyes glazed over without blinking. After that the seizures were different, in that she was on her side with legs moving rapidly, trying to get up, still not blinking and crying out loudly. Following the seizures her breathing is rapid and shallow. The medication was administerd after her first seizure. |

Give thiamin (Viatamin B1) as for treating for polio. She needs 5 mg/pound of weight every 4 hours for the first 24 to 48 hours then 2 to 3 times a day for 5 to 7 more days. Use Fortified B Complex Injectable (this has 100 mg/ml of thiamin) and give 1 cc per 20 pounds by SQ injection. If you can only get the Regular B COmplex injectable (this only has 12.5 mg/ml of thiamin) you will have to give 1 cc per 2 pounds. The diarrhea can have caused polio as can some of the drugs you are giving (I think the Cotin is Corid?) Fenbendazole is largely ineffective as a dewormer. You can buy a horse dewormer paste that has ivermectin as an active ingredient and give this at 3 times the horse dose by weight after you get the seizing under control. When you say seizures please tell me exactly what she does. Any rapid eye movement or unable to stand circles or staggering when she walks. This sounds an awlful lot like Polio to me. Barbara Howard jamesa@mrtc.com 606-522-3388 KY

We have a one year old female pygmy goat that developed dairrhea and shivering yesterday. The diarrhea started as loose stool and within several hours became almost urine-like in consistency. We purchased Fenbendazol at the local farm store, and gave it to her along with Sulfamethazole, and Cotin that the vet had given to us. (farm store does not carry Alvomec or generics) When we went into her pen, prior to giving the medication, she started seizing. She is continuing to have periodic seizures, and is just laying around breathing shallowly. We are trying to locate a vet who can make a house call here, but have been unsuccesful so far (they limit their practices to small animals such as dogs and cats). One other sick goat developed diarrhea two days before, but has not deteriorated. Any suggestions until we can get this goat to a vet? |

Yes you can usually get the Ivomec (or a generic) at any farm store. Be sure to buy at least one needle and a couple of syringes of appropriate size to get the dewormer out of the bottle. You can treat coccidia with Albon or Sulmet 12.5% drinking water solution (get this at the feed store too it is laeled for poultry and cattle). Give it as it comes straight from the bottle directly to the goats without mixing it with their water at 1 cc per 5 pounds for 5 days to treat coccidia. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Maggie Thanks so much for a prompt response. Can I get these meds from my local farm supply store? Will try to get them in the morning. |

They are likely wormy and the drugs your vet gave only treat coccidia, not worms. And if the problem is coccidia the treatment your vet has them on is not good enough. They need the sulfamethazole at 1 cc per 5 pounds once a day for 5 FULL DAYS. Look at the lower inner eyelids, they should be bright deep pink, if they are pale pink or white your goats are severely anemic from intestinal and stomach worms. I recommend giving Ivomec Injectable for Cattle and Swine, give it ORALLY at 1 cc per 25 pounds for 2 days repeat in 2 weeks. This drug is very safe even at 50 times this dosage, YOU MUST BE SURE TO GIVE ENOUGH, give an extra cc to be sure. You can give the sulfa drug and the dewormer at the same time if you want, but I don't think these goats have coccidia...You can give Geritol at the adult dose for adult goats or half the adult dose for kids once or twice a day for a week or two to help rebuild the red cells in the blood. We had 5 pygmy goats at Christmas time and are now down to 3. 2 of the three are sick now. They have been battling diarrhea. They are not eat well, have low energy and are losing weight. The vet gave us cotin & sulfamethazole to give to them 2x a day for 2 days. They will temporarily improve. Don't know what to do and am afraid of losing them all. |
