Yes the buck will breed his own daughters (and sons will breed their sisters and their mothers...) I have found that putting up indoor/outdoor carpeting along fences will keep goats from breeding through the fence and it lasts a very long time. I use those plastic cable ties to put the carpeting up. So put the buck and a wether buddy in a separate pasture. If daddy breeds his daughter chances are nothing unusual will happen. Bad traits can become accentuated. But this type of breeding goes on with very experienced breeders with exceptional animals, and is called a tight line breeding. Of course there is the good possibility especially with boers, nubians, and pygmies that the young does can be bred at a very young age (as young as 3 to 4 months old) and this is not good. Also be aware that buck kids can be fertile as young as 12 weeks old too and those taller does will gladly lay down for him...Castrate, wean and separate or sell all buck kids at about 10 weeks or so. Maggie, we let the does and their kids out to play in a separate yard during the day. Our buck is out with the rest of the herd all the time. We weren't sure is he would hurt the kids or eventually try to breed them? We are still trying to figure out how we are going to keep everyone separated. We have 3 different fenced in areas, but they are all joining on one side. Will the daddy want to breed his own daughters? And what would happen if the daddy would accidentally breed his daughter? Would there be problems? We will be getting rid of some of the babies once they are weaned, but not sure what to do until then. Thanks so much for the help, Debi |

This is lice. I would use any product that is safe for puppies and kittens, like Adam's flea and tick spray on the kids. You will need to treat ALL of your goats once a week for at least 3 weeks. You really don't soak the goats down, just spray on like doing your cat or dog with flea spray. Change the bedding. Lice are something all goats get. Some dewormers are effective against lice too, like ivermectin pouron. This would be safe for the kids. Lice are species specific, goat lice don't infect humans and human lice don't infect goats. There is no need to keep the does and kids stalled up, they really do better if they are out and able to exercise more and become members of a herd. Mine go back out with the doe herd and the kids when they are 2 to 3 days old. You might also want to deworm all of the does now (I do it the day they kid or the day after). Safeguard is not effective in most of the US anymore I prefer to use Ivomec Injectable for Cattle given orally at 1 cc per 25 pounds. Be sure to give enough, give and extra cc it is very safe even in very high doses. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

We have had 8 babies within the past 3 weeks. We have stalled each doe and her kids in separate stalls in the barn. The 2 1/2 week old twins and 3 week old twins have what appears to be little white eggs attached to the hair around the sides of their nose just below their eyes. Also noticed some around their ears. I am thinking it looks like lice. We have a Goat & Sheep Spray made by Gordon's that conatains 0.50% of Permethrin. Is this going to treat it??? Is there any other way to treat this other than soaking them down??? Also, We have three children that have held and loved on these babies daily. If this is lice, should we treat the children and us for head lice??? We are new to all this baby stuff this year and are very excited. I am doing as much reading as possible on learning how to care for these little babies. Any help as far as care, feed, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, Debi |
