Usually (but not always) a goat has a high fever at the start (first day or two) of listeria but not with polio. A goat will usually still eat when they have polio, but not when they have listeria. Goats that improve very quickly (in a few hours) after being given a high dose of thiamin nearly always have polio, but this is only the case if the goat was treated early at the first signs of symptoms. But the two are so similar and so life threatening that the usual recommendation is to treat for both. Polio is caused by a lack of thiamin, listeriosis is a bacterial brain infection caused by the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. This bacteria is found nearly everywhere in soil, it is often found in feeds and hay contaminated with dirt. When you are sticking the needle in be sure you DO NOT have your finger on the plunger. Injecting even a tiny amount directly into the skin (not under it) can sting very much. Be sure you go all the way under the skin but not into the muscle (needle should go in at an angle and about 1 inch). No the goat doesn't usually bleed after an injection. You really need to figure out why so many of your goats are getting polio and why you keep having a problem. Most of the time this is a fairly rare thing. Are your goats eating fallen leaves from last fall? This is what my goat that has had polio twice this year was doing. The leaves on the ground are moldy but some goats will eat them anyway. Old hay easpecially hay from the bottom of the pile or hay that has been stored on the ground or in a dirt floor barn, or hay that has been (is getting) rained on is moldy and will cause polio. Corn this time of year is often a bit moldy. If they continue to eat whatever it is that is giving them polio, they will keep getting sick over and over again. This condition causes brain damage which is usually permanent, even if a goat seems to get over it. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

now I do use different needles from one to get it from the bottle and another to the goat should the goat bleed a little after the shot when I do have the needle in the goat she hollers like she getting hit by a car. what is the differce between listeria and polio. This goat ca't stand that well and leans to one side (the right side for the goat). she also drags her right front leg she don't even pick a little. Thanks MAGGIE you a life saver.(goat saver) |

I just switch sides from left to right when giving the shots and I give it in the loose skin over the ribs behind the elbow and behind the shoulder blade. Her getting a bit fiesty about geting stuck could be a sign of improvement. You will also find that if you use a fresh needle, NOT THE ONE YOU PUT THROUGH THE STOPPER IN THE BOTTLE, to give the injection she won't feel it as much. I leave one needle WITH the bottle and use it to draw up the medication then put on a fresh needle to inject the goat. If I am doing the injecting alone, I put the goats head between my knees and back her into a corner, or put them in a stanchion, or put a collar on and tie them short to a stout fence or post. I don't give penicillin when I am SURE I am treating polio, and not treating listeria. Polio is not caused by bacterial infection, listeria is, and an antibiotic is only neede when treating an infection. But if you are not sure which you are treating then you need to continue the penicillin at least twice a day for at least 5 straight days. As for using the penicillin for only 4 days, this is for animals going to market or being milked in a commercial dairy. Not the case with your pygmy goats. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

You need to give 500 mg of thiamin THREE TIMES a day (If using Fortified B Complex that is 5 cc THREE TIMES A DAY). And penicillin at 1 cc per 15 pounds TWICE a day. Be sure she is able to eat and drink and not be bullied by the other goats. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic
