He has navel ill, an infection and it likely is spreading to his joints. I suggest giving oxytetracycline (LA 200 or Biomycin 200) at 1 cc per 30 pounds by SQ injection once a day for 10 days (this is the treatment recommended on Fiasco Farm). I have used this a number of times with amazing results. It certainly can't hurt to try it. There have been studies to suggest that dipping the cord in strong iodine does little good, a better antiseptic is nolvasan. Also dipping and tying is no guarantee against infection. I use the nolvasan now. So just because you dipped and tied DO NOT rule out the possibility that a kid has navel or joint ill when they are acting like this. Some don't get a swelling at the navel either but are just less playful, lay around alot and may stand in such a way as to take pressure off their legs. I find it more on kids that have very attentive dams, the doe spends lots of time cleaning and licking the kid's cord and navel the day they are born, introducing bacteria no matter how careful you were. Hi -- We just noticed one of our 9 day old billies is sluggish and has swelling and a half dollar sized knot that's hard around his naval and is very tender to touch. He is nursing but doesn't want to play with the others like he did earlier. He just lies down. His naval was tied off and dipped with 7% iodine at birth. Did this have anything to do with it? Any suggestions? Thanks, The Dickmans} |
