I took Bulldog to the vet this morning. thank goodness he would see him without an appt. The abcess was aspirated. He is on penicillin sq for the next 3 days. He was given dexamethesine (sp) to reduce the edema. Bulldog has a follow- up appt on Wednesday to see what the next step will be.
I will never ever do this again! It is far better to deal with the nuisance of CL and excise it when it is "ripe". This abcess was right below his ear, right location for CL; but as you said Barbara, not all lumps are CL. I found a tick just behind the abcess and it may have been the cause. It had all the appearances and acted just like a CL abcess.
I have another Buck, Abraham with a lump that is the size of a croquet ball- huge. It's on his cheek and I won't inject it. Hair is still on it and I think at some point with someone holding him, I'll excise it. Otherwise, I'm going to just leave it alone and watch it.
Thank you for answering my call for help. Knowing that Bulldog will be alright, it will take time though; I can get some sleep tonight. My goats are my "kids" and I fret over them. I love these dear animals so much.

Hi,
Did this lump have any loss of hair?
You know it has every chance of not being CL .
I do not advise anyone to use Formalin it's just to iffy for me you have to enter in the middle of the lump and make sure you get it in the lump and don't go through the lump into healthy tissue.

If were mine I would go ahead and lance the lump and squeese everything in it out then fill the pocket of the lump with Iodine.

You can get back in touch with me if you want.

My 1 year old boer buck has a swelling under his ear which is hard. We have CL in our group and so I suspected that this is what he had. I injected the abcess with 2 ccs of formalin. I couldn't sleep worrying about him and so went to the goat farm to check on him. His swelling below his ear is hard at the injection site. The abcess has lost it's shape of being very round and the side of his face is swollen. What do I do? Did the abcess break? Did the formalin go into healthy tissue? I am distraught. I will never ever use formalin again to treat abcesses. I am scared that I have hurt him. Please help! All I can do is pray and cry.
