We have a 5 day old Nubian doe kid who was rejected by her mother. She was rescued from serious hypothermia, and is now doing well on replacement formaula. Her stool is tinged with a mucousy red blood stain and is slightly soft. She seems fine, but this concerns me. What is this? Is there something we can do?

Roy,
This is likely mites or lice. I would treat by using a pouron delicer such as Synergized Delice or use a pour on Ivermectin (use as a pour on to treat lice at twice the cattle dose). You will need to treat once a week for three weeks. Put diaper rash ointment on the raw places to help sooth, protect and heal the wounds.

I have a 4 yr old doe who is new to my herd, and is approaching delivery. Her milk bags are almost full, and is very large with her abdomen. This morning I went out and she was very withdrawn, staying away from the other goats, wouldnt come out of her stable and refusing food or water. I thought that maybe she was about to delivery, but that was 10 hours ago. No discarge noted, however, her tail bone is unlocated, and her vulva is swollen. Is this all normal, or should I seek proffesional help? She is not staggering, but is getting up and down, and cant seem to get comfortable. I did not notice ant visible contractions, but the kid inside is really moving a lot. What should I expect?

They usually pass the meconium within 12 to 18 hours after that th poop should be yellow. If I don't see yellow poop by 24 hours old I give an enema. A Fleet's Infant Enema works well for regular sized goats.

Is there an antibiotic uterine bolus subsitute? The only antibiotic uterine boluses we have found in the stores come in large, expensive packs, but we don't have a huge number of goats. It seems like that would be impractical. Is there something else similar and just as effective that I can use if an emergency should come up? Thanks.

When do healthy newborn kids start producing yellow excrement? The same 3-day-old buckling, Nenad, of the young doe, Daizy, hasn't seemed to have produced the yellow waste yet, that I can see anyway, but I know he has passed the black stuff, meconium (spelling?). Thanks again.
