Thanks for being so helpful, Maggie. yes, I certainly have thrown the medicine cabinet at her. I really paniced when she got such a bad case of the runs. I lost two girls back in the summer, which started with the same thing; even though my whole herd were up to date on their cd/t's. Vet seemed to think it was entero, even though all the testing that was done on the one, did not say that was what it was. That is why I gave the cd antitoxin this time. Thanks again, and I will keep you updated on her condition.

She does not have tetanus, really! You have already thrown the medicine cabinet at her, its time to let up. She needs to rest and let the dex work.

Thanks for the help, Maggie. If I give her tetanus antitoxin (just in case the eyelid swelling is a symptom of tetanus, pray not!!) will it hurt or counterreact with anything else that she has already been given?
when I trimmed her hooves, I did cut to where they did bleed some, but I didn't think it was bad enough to warrant terrible worry. She has a pretty good limp on her front foot. I have 6 cc/s of tetanus antitoxin on hand. Thanks for help. Waiting your response to go out and check on her and give the tetanus antitoxin.

Tetanus does not show up that quickly, the incubation time is usually several weeks. The original wound would have an abscess. The third eyelid would be visible on her open eye and she would be rigid, they don't protrude they are unnaturally partially extended across the open eye. This is not tetanus. Likely her vaccine given last November is protecting ehr just fine (humans only need them every 10 years or so!). Don't give her any more drugs, she really is fine. Her swollen eyelids could be similar to bottle jaw, and due to anemia from worms.

5 ccs of valbazen is enough for a 50 pound goat. The dose is 1 cc per 10-15 pounds. If you didn't give enough give it again. The effective dose for goats is nearly double that for cattle.

Epinephrine can be helpful for all types of reactions, but it is best for severe allergic shock. I think your vet probably made the best choice in this case. I don't have dexamethazone in my medicine cabinet and I may have elected to try a small dose of epinephrine in case the eyelid swelling was just the beginning of a more severe reaction. Epi wears off pretty quickly, the dex will help the swelling for a much longer time.

Maggie, Was reading up on allergic reactions and somehow came across the article on tetanus. I just trimmed this girl's hooves yesterday, cut down too closely and she was limping badly today, I had noticed this even before the diahrrea. She had had her CD/T's back in November. The article said that one of the symptoms of tetanus is protrusion of the 3rd eyelid. Praying this is not what is going on. Gonna read more on tetanus, to check on that. Don't know if diahrrea is a symptom also or not. I have tetanus antitoxin. Should I go ahead and give her a dose?

I did worm her today with valbazen wormer. gave her 5 cc/s. I do have epinephrine on hand, but it is expired. Thought that was only for shock, which is immediately after giving a shot. There is no reaction at the vaccination site. Just the swelling of her eyelids. In your opinion, is this something that she WILL get over? Her diahrrea is not completely runny now, it is getting better, but is still very loose. Should I give her valbazen again tomorrow? Or try another wormer? Thanks

Could take a while to see any improvement. You have probably done all you can for now. Get some epinephrine to keep on hand for reactions. The dose for this is 0.1 cc per 10 pounds.

Diarrhea in young animals id often due to coccidia, and at her age it could be severe worms. Check her lower inner eyelid and deworm her if she is anemic (membranes should be very deep pink). Wormy goats have a very poor appetite.

Had a yearling doe with bad runny diahrrea this afternoon. Not acting herself. She was picking at her hay earlier in the evening, not eating any grain, and will not accept any animal crackers (this tells me she definitely is not feeling well!) She always loves animal crackers. Gave her baking soda, pen.G, banamine, and CD antitoxin (in case of entero) Went back out to check on her and her eyelids are swelled. Thinking she is having a reaction probably to the antitoxin. Called the vet, he said to give her dexamethasone. I also gave her 12 cc's of benedryl. Has anyone ever had one to have a reaction like this? And if so, what did you do for her (or him) Wandering HOW SOON I SHOULD SEE RESULTS FROM THE DEXAMETHASONE? He told me to give her 5 cc/s, I thought this sounded a bit high, but i respect my vet, and hope and pray that this is a good dosage. She weighs around 125 pounds. He also told me to give her Fortified Vitamin B complex twice a day. (5 cc/s)and pen G twice daily. Any ideas? Any help appreciated.}
