I would say it was listeria, the prognosis for a cure is always guarded at best, most goats die. Lister ia is a bacteria that lives in nearly all soil, it aggressively attacks brain cells and getting an antibiotic to cross the blood/brain barrier can be a challenge. Listeria is not caused by moldy feed. It is possible there was some soil in the alfalfa and she ate it. Listeria just happens it is most common in wet cool weather. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I had a pregnant doe a couple days ago that was fine, eating good, at the evening feeding, went to feed the next morning, and she had her head right next to the soda dish, head drooped, very weak, and drooling profusely. When I went toward her she took off running like I had shot her, stumbled, got up and did it again. I figured it was probably listerosis, took her temp, it was 104.2. I started her on Penicillian, and also thiamin, in case it was polio. Within 6 hours, she could not stand, had her head pulled to the side, She never responded to any treatment. She died after about 48 hours. I have never delt with listerosis, only read about it, so was wondering what your thoughts are on this one, and if there was anything else I could have done. I feed alfalfa/grass mix, plus just a handful of grain. I check close for mold, but being in the northwest it is very wet here. They also have free choice mineral mix for goats. http://www.angelfire.com/vt2/hilltopacres/
