Maggie, Sadly, the doe died this afternoon. I think she was just too far gone by the time we got to her. Some of the problem in diagnosing her was the owner had just had surgery so her husband was feeding, and he isn't as familiar with the animals and wouldn't have been as likely to notice something off. Another problem is we were assuming this doe was still carrying kids, and we started by treating her for toxemia. As it turns out, she was not pregnant. We'll never know if faster treatment would have saved her or not, we'll just have to hope to be more prepared if it happens again. |

Thanks Maggie, that's what I was thinking too. They were reluctant to accept a dx of polio, since she didn't exhibit the "classic" signs and symptoms. I figured it wouldn't hurt to treat her for it - we have B-complex, Prop. glycol and penG on hand, and without treatment she will surely be dead soon anyway. I'll post again to let you know how she gets on. |

She has polio, give the Fortified B Complex at 1 cc per 20 pounds every 4 hours for the first 24 hours then 2 to 3 times a day for the next week. It has been a bad year for polio. You might also start her on penicillin at 1 cc per 15 to 20 pounds on the same schedule as the B Complex just in case this is listeriosis and not polio. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

My neighbor's doe is down, she went down yesterday. This is an older doe, about 9 or 10 years old. She aborted a fetus about 6 weeks ago, but we suspect she is still pregnant, due in 3 weeks. She has no fever, no scours, and we can't detect any ketosis on her breath. There was no staggering, no off-feed, no sign of anything wrong prior to her going down yesterday. She could be encouraged to eat, and would get up with assistance. Today, she cannot stand even with help, not eating, and has her head pulled to the side. They gave magic solution yesterday. I just gave them some fortified B-complex and propylene glycol, but we're feeling pretty helpless at this point. Any suggestions? Sandi |
