Maggie, Just an update on the little boy. He is finally over the worst. I had begun him on excenel, at the vet's suggestion twice a day, A & D Vitamins, along with the B-Complex, and he is finally playful as all newborns are. He runs out to play with the others now on sunny days. Thanks for all your help; and Thank God for this site.

The temp is within the normal range and I would stay with the Biomycin. The jammies are your call I have never used them on my goats. I am in NC there are no doors on my barn, can't remember where you are.

I took his temp. It is 103.4 Was going to count the heart rate before I come in, but got to doing something else, and forgot. Is the Biomysin the correct antibacterial; or would you recommend something else? What about giving a dose of banamine? What is the best thing for me to do at this point to try to avoid infection, other than what I am already doing? I had been keeping a pair of kid jammies on him, but took them off today, should I put them back on him? He has been breathing this way for about 3 days or so.

You can actually feel the heartbeat at the ribs just behind the elbows, count it there. The abdominal movement suggests labored breathing not an irregularly fast heartbeat. Normal for kids is 110 to 150 beats per minute. Normal for adults is 70 to 90 beats per minute.

If you had to syringe colostrum in he may have aspiration pneumonia. Take his temp. With aspiration pneumonia he may not have an infection so to speak so no fever but has a foreign substance in his lungs causing fluid to build up. There really isn't much to do for it except to try to prevent infection and hope the lungs can heal themselves. Tube feeding is MUCH safer!

Maggie, This is in regards to the baby that I had born last Saturday, and got chilled. He got off to a bad start. I had to syringe colostrum into him, because he would not nurse for about 6 hours after birth. Then had to give him the enemas to make his bowels move. question is this: bowels are moving now, but his heartbeat is too fast. I've been giving him biomysin 200 (in case of pnemonia) and fortified b complex. I put him and mom back out with the rest of the girls and kids today, in hopes of getting him to interminge with the other kids and move around more. What do you do for an irregularly fast heartbeat? His little belly goes in and out hard and fast, this is what makes me believe his heartbeat is too fast. None of my other kids are doing this. He does not seem to be breathing too hard thru his nose and mouth. No nasal discharge. Last time I took his temp it was normal. (That's been a few days ago, however)Thanks for any help you can give. (Once again)
