Thanks, Maggie. I am such an over protective mother and sometimes think I may be overdoing it. I am so silly that I hold their ears against their heads when they drink while I am there, so no one gets cold, wet ears. He is fine today and I will be taking some warm water out. I don't know what I would do without you and this site. I have learned so much and I read every emergency on here hoping to learn more and maybe be able to help someone and their babies someday. |

He probably was just stretching. I don't think you are overfeeding the grain. Keep an eye on him and try to observe him peeing. A wter heate just barely keeps the water from freezing. Try taking a bucket of warm water out to the goats once a day and see what a hero you become! Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

This morning my 10.5 month old wether after eating arched his back and bleated a couple of times. I was not there (working) and my father fed. He didn't tell me anything happened until this evening. I immediately went to the barn and he was fine. acted half starved and starting eating hay as normal. I felt his belly and sides and they were normal, I checked for crystals on the hair around his penis and I could not feel anything. There were droplets and looked like everything was good. I pressed a lot of places and he did not seem painful. Not sure what I am dealing with so I gave him about half the grain (about 3/4 cup) I have been giving and plenty of hay. It is cold outside, but the water bucket is heated. His eyelids are bright pink. I just wondered if he may be developing or passed a stone, although he did not urinate at the time. He is normally a very talkative goat, but the arching back has me concerned. I have seen the other 2 wethers (one 9mths and the other 5 years) do this at one time or another and were fine, but as soon as I saw it gave some extra ammonium chloride. Should I try to take them all off grain completely? the 5 year old gets a handful and the younger one gets about 1.5 cups 2xday. |
