Just gave him another enema, and the antitoxin. Do you think that I need to get a store bought enema, rather than the warm water, for better results? I got some of the yellow poop out this time. How often can I give the enema? He still feels full to me, even after the enema. Also, he seems to be peeing alot. Is that a good sign or no? Thanks for the info on the Ringer's Lactate. I will get some to keep on hand. |

It is the intravenous fluid often used in hospitals. It can be given in fairly large quantities (10 to 20 cc) as a SQ injection in smaller animals under the loose skin over each shoulder and will do much the same thing as an IV would (a bit slower), provide hydration and some nutrition. With these kids that are having digestive issues it is a good way to "bypass" the digestive system to give it a rest. You do have to get it from a vet but it is usually pretty inexpensive. I keep a bag of it and have 20 cc syringes to give it with. It can really perk up a dehydrated kid without stressing his digestive system. Try putting about 1-2 cc of mineral oil in the enema to provide some lubrication. Dilute the pedialyte with half water. It has ALOT of sugar and sugar promotes the growth of the bacteria that causes entero. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I will give the antitoxin, I'm not sure what the Ringer's Lactate is. Is it an electrolyte? I have pedialyte. |

Sure won't hurt to give the antitoxin, its 3 cc every 6 to 8 hours. Do you have Ringer's Lactate to give as SQ fluids? Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I have some c & d antitoxin. Should I give him some? If so, is it 3 cc's? I will do another enema. |

Give another enema, especially since he still feels full. Massage his tummy. He could be on his way to a case of enterotoxemia if his digestive system doesn't start moving. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Well, day 2, and baby still does not move around much. Temp is still 102. I gave him a dose of penicillin, probios, and a small dose of banamine this a.m. Also, syringed him some pedialyte last night, as he would not suck it from the bottle. His belly still feels full, and he is peeing. Haven't seen any poop other than what came out with the enema. Can you give too many enemas? I gave another at bedtime last night, got very little out this time, it had a little more normal color. He still just takes a couple sips when he does nurse. All my other newborns just can't get enough when first born; this one is not like that, I don't know that he is even getting up at all, other than when I go out to the barn to get him up. He doesn't seem weak or anything when he is standing. This one has me bamboozled. Any ideas of what may be going on? |

Put him back with mom, keep an eye on him for the next few hours. He should be fine now. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Maggie, I gave the warm water solution, and wow, the stuff really came out of him!! Should I put him right back in with mom now to see if he will nurse? Or wait a bit, I can tell he already feels better. |

I do have a 10 cc syringe, but no weak kid feeding tube. Anything else I could insert onto the end of the syringe? Just warm water is all I need for an enema? |
