Thanks for the reply Maggie. I thought the same thing and did give BoSe as soon as it was obvious there was a problem...also gave Vitamin B/Thiamin. The last kid I did bring in the house and put in a warmer, and it seemed to start to recover some. Started it on goat serum and tube feeding but lost it during the night. I live in SE Ohio and do give the does a free range mineral supplemtn as we know we have copper deficiency. thanks again! |

Could be selenium deficiency, could be copper deficiency. You can give BoSe for selenium deficiency at 1/4 to 1/2 cc by SQ injection or orally to the weak kids. It won't have an immediate affect so you will have to milk out the does and tube feed or bottle feed the weak kids until they can stand and then they will be bottle babies. The neurological signs (arching the head back) is likely from both hypothermia (low body temperature) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Kids are born with very little reserves, they need to nurse within 30 minutes to be able to create body heat and supply the brain with the energy to function. Where are you located? What do you feed? Do you give a mineral supplement? Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I've had three kids born in the last two days...these came from first time moms. with all three kids, none would stand - back legs had no control, no strength. Two have already died won't nurse, can't stand. The third I am working on now, but eyes are rolling, he's arching his head back, cold....I'm at a loss. I have more does due, but have not seen this before. Any ideas? |
