She could have a slightly pinched or bruised nerve. It will most likely heal on its own as the swelling goes down. They nearly all do, I've had a few that way and they all healed fine. And I bet she is pretty sore. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Thank You so much. I just got to the vet supply before they closed. I did not even think of Preparation H. I wonder if the slight limping on her hind end is nerve damage or just the fact that she is sore. She is eating normaly with the other goats. So far I think she is doing good. I was so worried. Pinkie is one of my first babies. |

You can usually buy penicillin (look for procaine penicillin-G) or oxytetracycline (LA 200 or Biomycin 200) at the feed store. They must be injected, giving an adult goat oral antibioitcs is bad for their digestive system. If you get penicillin give it at 1 cc per 20 pounds by SQ injection twice a day for 5 days. If you get the oxytet give it at 1 cc per 30 pounds by SQ injection once a day for 5 days. Most goats do fine even after such a delivery. You did good! For pain and swelling you can give Pinkie Liquid Children's Motrin at 1 cc per 10 pounds every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Also some Preparation H smeared on her backside will help with the swelling and pain. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

My husband heard my 4 year old Nubian goat (Pinkie) make noise at 4:00 in the morning yesterday, when he was leaving to work. He did not bother to tell me. I found her in labor at 7:00 when I feed. She was mostly nesting but as time went on I could see her pushing with no results. At 11:00 she had long stings of mucus coming out. Contractions where about every two minutes. I knew something was wrong. At 1:00 I called my husband and daughter (they work together) to tell him to come home. He is 1 hour 20 minutes away in good traffic. Pinkie was not letting me get near her to see what was wrong. She would either move away or bite me. This was not Pinkie. While my husband was driving home her water broke. Still nothing after 30 minutes of pushing. I could tell she was getting tired. I put some OB gloves on with KY jelly and was not going to take No for a answer from her. I stood her up and pushed her against the barn wall. I could just feel a butt with no feet. It was very hard to tell what I was feeling. At that point Pinkie liked me because I smelled like baby. My daughter and husband got there to give me moral support. My daughter has smaller hands. She could not figure out where anything was. I finally reached in about 5 inches past my elbow and found one leg. Then I found a second leg. I am still was not sure what leg I had. I also was not sure if the two legs where from the same goat. I tried turning the baby. That was not happening at all. I tried pulling the legs. Was not coming. I tied pushing the baby back in. I tried all I could. She was bleeding a lot. It is 4:30 now. Finally something fell into place and I was able to pull the hind legs and deliver the huge baby boy. He was dead. We tried mouth to mouth but I figure he died when his cord broke inside his mother. Or maybe he was even dead before. A few minutes later Pinkie delivered a head of a twin. No feet. I pulled on the head and the smaller twin came out alive and healthy but copper color. He is a white goat. Another boy. Pinkie looks pretty good too for all she has been through. She is swollen and weak on her hind legs but is taking good care of her boy. Now I have to worry about infection. We have no vets here. Any advise on what I could treat her with that you can buy from a local vet supply? I feel bad. I feel I should have been able to do more. If she gets a infection, can she die? Or does it just effect if she ever has a kid again. I tried to stay as clean as I could but with all that went on that was not easy. I was bloody from my head to my toes. |
