Rubbed or chewed what? Her foot? She hasn't chewed on anything. Got her up this morning and she was not even trying to use her back end. She seems to be in pain somewhere in her back. I gave her a steriod shot this morning and will do again tomorrow morning and see if that helps. If it is a pinched nerve that should help the inflamation. I'm just really stumped!

Juanita,

I will have to look between her toes after work today. What is your reasoning for that?

The pinched nerve sounds like a possibility. I'm looking into finding a animal chiropractic type person to come out and see her. Also, with this goat being pregnant I don't think I should lay her across a hay bale to massage her legs...???? Any thoughts on that? We're on day two of the worming process so have a couple more days till we know if that was it or not. A lady in Canada had a goat with meningeal worms and had the same symptoms so we thought we'd give it a try. Thanks to everyone for their advice!

i have never had a goat with menengial worms, but i had a llama with it. the symptoms were acting very disoriented, eyes glazed, and he would spin in a circle like he was dizzy. the vet gave me a pretty heavy antibiotic to use on him. he went down and would not get up for about a week. i thought i was going to loose him. he needed coaxing to drink and eat. and for a few days i even forced some water. he was one sick boy. i am not an expert, but it doesn't sound like menengial worms.

She could have a pinched nerve. You will have to do therapy on her legs 3 to 4 times a day. Drape her across a hay bale in as close to a standing position as possible and stretch and massage all of her legs. The muscles and tendons in all of her legs will permanently atrophy and she won't be able to get up even if she wants to. This ca happen in less than a week.

The intermediate host of the meningeal worm larva and eggs is a snail. This is how the worm is passed along. The snail picks up the eggs or larva from eating plant materail that has been exposed to the feces of an infected deer. The snail is then accidently eaten by the deer or goat and the new cycle begins. I don't think its meningeal worm either but it can't hurt to treat.

May I ask what the hoof looks like between the toes on that leg?

We bred our Nubian Doe this past November and in December she started having a limp in one of her back legs. It's increasingly gotten worse over time. Now she can't get up at all even though the one leg seems to be "okay". It's almost like she has paralysis in her back end. Vet came out - heart/lungs sound good, no temp., eating well, bright eyed and seems just fine. Mystified! I know Meningeal worm is carried by white tailed deer but we don't have white tail deer here only mule deer (Steamboat Springs Colorado). We do have slugs that were underneath the goat's water tank during the summer. I've read where they can be infected with the worm as well. My vet just doesn't think it cold be the meningeal worm but we are going to try the treatment anyway. The doe is my son's 4-H Nubian goat and is due in April. Any help would be wonderful!! Anyone else have a similiar case in or around Colorado?????
