Give 2 cc lutalyse SQ about 10 days to 2 weeks from the kidding date. This helps to finish cleaning out the uterus. If she is penned up let her out with the herd. Often a good walk around will loosen things up too. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Okay, God willing, this will be the last question for a while. How much Lutalyse? Thanks! |

I have a vet that recommends keeping them on penicillin for 5 days and then at about day 10 or so giving lutalyse to bring them into heat and help clean them out. I have also tied a latex glove filled with water to it to put some gentle pressure on it to help it come on out. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Is there an alternative to the oxytocin? Can you just wait it out or does something have to be done? |

May be too late for oxytocin, that should be given within 8 hours and no more than 24 hours of kidding. It causes uterine contractions (cramps) and if the cervix isn't open some it can make the doe pretty uncomfortable. The dose for oxytocin is 1 cc by SQ injection for any sized goat. When I went back out part of it had broken off. She still has some cord type stuff hanging out and it's not going anywhere. The vet said to come by and get some Oxytocin (sp?). How much should I give? |

I have had this same thing with a couple of my does. I have found that the afterbirth passes much faster if you tie the afterbirth in a knot or two, depending on how long it is. If it is too long, cut some off, and tie the rest. This adds weight and helps it to pass easier. |

You can cut part of the placenta off, do not pull on it. The dose for penicillin is 1 cc per 15 to 20 pounds by Sq injection tiwce a day for 5 days. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

My Nubian doe Freida kidded this afternoon. It was a hard labor and we lost one but the other two are fine. She passed one afterbirth in about two or three hours. The second one came out about five oclock and it's nine now and it has just been dragging behind her and doesn't look like it's going to turn loose. She is getting it caught on the babies and I was wondering if I could cut part of it off or try gently pulling on it or should I leave it alone? I Also, I had to pull the first and second baby so I was going to give her Penicillen. Is 5cc 2 times a day for 5 days the right amount? Thanks for the help. |
