Necropsy is a great idea. Don't wait, get it done. Refrigerate but do not freeze the body if you have to wait. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Candy, if you are using the drinking water solution of the sulmet, you give it straight orally 2cc per 10lbs first dose, then 1cc per 10lbs for 5 days. If you miss a day, you have to start over at day one. The pepto is 15cc once a day. Here is some notes I have taken for scouring kids: SCOURS KIDS 2CC CD antitoxin sq 3cc polyserum sq Biosol 5cc orally twice a day for 3 days Pepto 15cc orally once a day thiamin (because of biosol) 500 mg daily Calf pac after biosol. If you are giving sulmet, I would skip the biosol. If you are tubing electrolyes, I would give 2-4oz every couple of hours. http://www.angelfire.com/vt2/hilltopacres/

Hi Candy, yes I would tube the electrolyte, if he can swollow you can give the sulmet orally. And I would give the pepto, will coat the gut. http://www.angelfire.com/vt2/hilltopacres/

I hope he holds on till tonight, I HAD to work today(got to pay for the vet bill yesterday). The vet took a stool sample yesterday to check for cocci, I should get the results today. Also when the vet checked his temp there was a little blood on the thermometer. If his stool comes back positive for cocci will it be o.k. to tube him with pediolyte and the Sulmet or should I try to give the Sulmet orally? Do you think pepto would help with the diarrhea? I did pull on his skin this morning and it was tight. I thought if it stayed tented up or didn't spring back was how to check for dehydration. I really appreciate all the help everyone gives |

Hi Candy, I agree with Sandi about cocci, but I haven't ever seen a goat vomit from it, but that could have been caused by the gas the vet gave. If he hasn't drank in a while he really needs fluids. If the rumen isn't working he won't be able to process milk. Check to see if his eyes look sunken, or his skin real tight, those are signs of dehydration. Also I would check his temp to make sure he isn't losing body heat. I would treat him for the cocci, and try getting some electrolytes in him. http://www.angelfire.com/vt2/hilltopacres/

Candy, Diarrhea in a month old kid is almost always coccidia. At one month, I seriously doubt you can get him to drink from a bottle. I've only treated coccidia once, and lost the kid, so I don't know how much I can help, but I'll just tell you what I know and what I've read since then. You need to give him Albon, Sulmet or De-cox. Mix according to bottle directions. I believe the dose is 1cc/10 lbs for 5 days. There are other posts and information on this site and others about treating coccidia. I try to keep notes, one note I have is don't use Co-Rid, it is no longer effective. From my own experience, I would NOT drench him with his mother's milk. He won't be able to process the milk, and it will just add to the diarrhea. Meanwhile, you need to treat for loss of fluids. Drench with pediolyte or an electrolyte solution for livestock. I remember our little buck would stand and lick the barn siding and nail heads. He was clearly telling us he wanted minerals/electrolytes and we kept trying to give him milk. If he becomes too weak, you may have to tube him. We were afraid to tube, so we ran IV solution under his skin. It was much easier to tube, and not everyone has access to IV fluids, needles, and tubing. Sandi |

Good morning everyone, Just came in from checking on my kid buck Moby. The 1 month old that wont eat and kind of moping around. He's still alive, now he has diarrhea, and it doesn't seem he is nursing. He's just standing around, but not grinding his teeth. I'm worried he will dehydrate if he don't start nursing soon. Think I should drench him with Pediolyte or some water solution to supplement him. I have some of his mothers milk, thought about trying to get him to drink from a bottle, but I doubt he will. Please, any suggestions would be appreciated. |
