This goat has polio, caused by a thiamin deficiency. Giving a dose of thiamin can produce a very fast result, but it doesn't last as the thiamin is used up. The rumen and intestinal microbes that produce thiamin have somehow been killed off or severely depleted. He needs to have thiamin every 4 to 6 hours for the next 24 to 48 hours. Then 2 to 3 times a day for 7 to 10 more days to give those microbes a chance to replenish. Giving a probiotic every day will help with this too. But the only effective treatment is giving thiamin regularly while this happens. He needs to get this TONIGHT. Polio can often cause permanent brain damage and death. Being serevely worm infestred can cause this condition as can eating moldy feed or hay, a sudden change in diet, certain meds including Corid and oral antibiotics (or antibiotics given at too high a dose). The aspirin won't really do anything. Please call the vet tonight and get the meds he needs.

Hello,
Hope someone can help. Woke up this morning to find goat "in a pile" on the barn floor. His neck was twisted at a very awkward angle in the corner. I thought he was dead. Poked him and pulled him onto his chest. Called vet who came 2hrs later. By this time goat had been able to get to his feet with help, but was very weak and shakey. After that he was walking around by the time the vet arrived. Vet gave antibiotic, thiamine, something for anemia (gums are pale) Seemed ok until dinner time. Now he is standing and "stargazing". Will not move around, it is dark, not interested in food. Vet also gave asprin (4) and wanted me to repeat this. Vet doesnt know what else to do? Any ideas would be appreciated. (He is a large Nigerian dwarf)
Wendy
