K: I am assuming you are located here in the Astoria area?
If so you can get C&D at Papa Jack's in town.
Just thought you may like to have this info.

Milk replacers, even the best, are cheap substitutes for real milk. They were meant for use on dairy goat kids when the owner wanted the real milk for themselves. Most kids do okay on replacers, but the formula on the articles page is better. Of course real fresh goat's milk is always the best.

I am glad to hear he is resting comfortably. Try to feed many small meals a day, like his mom would do. I try for at least 4 meals a day, 6 is better and I usually cut them off just before they are full.

That makes me feel much better to know the signs. He is actually sleeping peacefully right now, so hopefully he will be fine. Maybe it was a mild case, I don't know. The vet said this afternoon not to give him milk again for 24 hours, so I was going to give it to him tomorrow mid-day. He is on small doses of NutriDrench until then.
The milk replacer that I am using is Purina Kid Replacer, made specially for goats. But I will check the label to see if that might be the problem. I did see the recipe for homemade milk replacer, and I think I will try to switch him over to that gradually. I don't want to go through this again!

I would say he is on the mend. A good appetite is a good sign. With bad entero the gut pain increases no matter what you do, the kidneys fail (the toxins attack the kidneys) and the goat displays neurologic signs such as throwing the head uncontrollably over the back. When did the vet say he could go back on milk? And what kind of milk/milk replacer are you using?

If you are/were using a milk replacer that has any soy or wheat protein (read teh label carefully) in it this may have been the whole cause of his problem. Lamb and calf milk replacers are often too strong for kids too. Plant proteins often give young kids a huge belly ache and severe bloat. The articles page has a very good homemade milk replacer recipe under the heading Kids and Kidding.

Thank you for the response. Today was the first day of penicillin, and I am supposed to give it again tomorrow. I think my goat baby (Corbin) feels a little better with the Milk of Magnesia. He seems to really want his bottle, as he vigorously takes his Gatorade from it, which I guess is a good sign? If it were really bad entero, would he be very lethargic and not take his bottle? I'm not sure what other signs to look for to decide what else to do-- do I just wait and see now?
I had forgotten about the ProBios, so thanks for reminding me to do that-- I have some for goats on hand. This has been really nerve-wracking for me, so I sincerely appreciate your sharing your knowledge on this!

Where there is life there's hope. Do order the CD antitoxin but you won't get it in time for this case. Poly serum does nothing for entero caused by clostridial bacteria, but on the chance that the problem is salmonella or e. coli it would likely be very effective. Do give a probiotic to replenish and help rebalance the good intestinal microbes. You will know in another day or 2 probably if you are going to be successful. Are you still giving the penicillin too? I have found that to be required when treating entero...

I have a 2 week old Spanish bottle baby who I think has Enterotoxemia. The vet didn't have any C&D antitoxin, so he gave me polyserum (I think this is for cattle?), and penicillin, along with Thiamin. I can't find any C&D antitoxin in my area-- should I order it from Valley Vet or does anyone know if the polyserum is just as good? My baby has a fever and isn't feeling well, though he does take Gatorade from his bottle still. He is on pain reliever, so he isn't bleating in pain as he was this morning. I noticed last night that he didn't take very much of his bottle, and today he only took a few sips and still felt full though he hadn't eaten, which got me concerned. He doesn't have bad diarrhea, though he is on Milk of Magnesia. I just need someone to tell me that he has a chance and that this doesn't mean certain death for him? He appears to feel the same as he did last night, with no improvement or worsening. Hopefully this means that it's not an acute case since it's already been about 24 hours and he's still alive? He's my favorite baby, so any information is appreciated! THanks!
