Offer her some Gaterade or even better yet Pedialyte if you have it. Offer warm water with just a tiny bit of molassis or dark karo. Offer her a bit of oatmeal dry. Maggie is so right about the Penncillin orally but it can be placed in the womb when you have had to help a doe. She needs all the fluids that you can get her to take and coax her to start eating if you can. Juanita DixsignsRompingRockDairy |

Please do not give penicillin by mouth. It destroys the vital rumen microbes and does nothing for a uterine infection given this way. Give it twice a day by SQ injection 1 cc per 20 pounds for 5 to 7 days. Give her some sort of pain relief. Banamine if you have it is ideal, give 0.1 cc per 10 pounds once or twice a day for up to 4 days. Or give Liquid Children's Motrin at 1 cc per 10 pounds every 4 to 6 hours. Please give a probiotic to replenish teh lost rumen and intestinal microbes. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Thank you all for your advice. To make a long story short, I had a very difficult time to get her three babies (two breach) out and had to call a neighbor to help. The baby billie is alive but her two does died. She did pass her afterbirth and her baby got his first drink. She stands up with difficulty and lets him drink and then lays down. I have been giving her pennicillin in her mouth and into her vagina and hope she is not torn inside. There is no bleeding out of the vagina area but she is very weak, drank water but not eating. I will keep you posted. Renee |

Renee, this is probably to late to help now, but thought if you run across this type of situation again, or others that haven't heard of this product, try J-Lube. It comes in a powder form, mix a tiny bit with a small amount of warm water and you have the best lube there is for assisting a birth. You can get it thru suppy houses such as Jeffers or American Livestock. But it is real sticky on the hands afterward, rub a little table salt on your hands and it comes right off. Hope all is ok with your Doe. http://www.angelfire.com/vt2/hilltopacres/

If she has been pushing for more than 30 minutes with no kids, SHE IS IN TROUBLE NOW. You have to do something NOW. Go in and reposition those kids or get her to a vet. Waiting until tomorrow is too late and cruel. She is prolapsing her vagina, not her womb, this is fairly common with overweight pygmies, and doesn't really interfere with kidding if the kids are presented correctly and not too big to be born. She can't push her womb out until she pushes the kids out. Get the kids out and she will be fine. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Renee, I'm sure some of the others will answer too...it could be that the kid(s) are presenting themselves abnormally and the first thing I would suggest is getting some type of lubricant and feeling inside for a twisted neck, legs, etc. Since she is a Pygmy, you'll need to be real careful because of her small size (hopefully you have a small hand)... I had this same type of situation several months ago with a Nubian...one of the legs was positioned in such a way that the doe would push and nothing would come out. After several hours I had to go in and try to reposition the kid (which was dead). It took awhile since I have pretty large hands, but I was able to reposition the kid and (as bad as this sounds), tie a rope around the dead kids neck and gradually pull the kid out - note that I used the entire contents of a large jar of vaseline. So I'd start right away by feeling inside for any abnormalities. Best regards, Gayr Pfalzbot |

MY pigmy doe has her womb partly sticking out for a week now. I pushed it in but it keeps coming out. This is her third kidding to the same buck. She has gone into labor today on her due date but has been in labor for several hours now, pushing but nothing happening, the womb and rectom are both being pushed out. I dont want to leave her all night pushing in case she pushes everything out during the night but dont know if she will have her kids on her own, (She had two both times before)or if there will be problems with her being able to push the kids through the womb if it is hanging part out. I would appreciate any advice on what to expect and do. Renee |
