Yep they are like that when you are weaning. So give him a bottle but just a few sucks then take it away. Do not let him tank up. Feed him maybe twice a day, then in a week or two once a day (I am talking 1 to 2 OUNCES each time). Then one day just quit. This is how his mother would wean him, they don't allow them to get their fill. If he is 12 weeks old it is time to start cutting back the milk, get him off the bottle. He will get over it in less than a week sometimes just a few days if you don't give in. Put him out during the whole day, he needs to learn to be a goat if you hope to use him as a breeding sire. He is very nearly old enough to breed so don't put him with any unbred does. Bring him in later and later each day. My orphan pygmies spend the day and night with the herd once they are 5 to 8 days old or so, if they are normal and healthy. I do not have heat lamps, I sometimes have hog mats and my barn does not have doors. You do need an adequately large shelter for all of your goats to get in out of the wind and weather. Be very careful with heat lamps many barns and kennels have burnt down because of them. Deep bedding goes much farther towards keeping the animals warm and SAFE. Deep bedding and heat lamps can easily be trouble. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

He will cry til ya give him a bottle. And he is getting very loud now. I am scared and worried that if I put in the field that he will get to cold and I will lose him. I do have one stall for them to go to warm up it has one heat lamp in it. By next winter I am going to have a few hog mats for them. But I would like to get him outside asap. |

He's drinking trust me. There is such a thing as water intoxication, or water poisoning. He expects milk from the bottle and will drink regardless of what is actually in it (you would be amazed what you can make a bottle baby drink....). Too much water dilutes the blood and causes the red cells to burst, causing anemia and in too high an amount can cause death. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I purchased a buck just 2 days old. I have been bottle feeding. He was born Oct 31, purchased on November 2nd.I have had all bottle babys inside for the first week or two. He goes outside daily. My problem is he is eating feed very well but I do not see him drinking water at all. He constantly has a fresh bowl in his cage and in the field.Except for now we have snow and below freezing temps day and night.I was giving him water in his bottle but I seen a post that says not to give water thru bottle. How can I be sure that he is drinking water so he can go to the field permanetly. |
