I guess I should defend myself, although I also would like to thank those who did already. For starters, we had kids this time last year and were fine. We live in Texas which anyone will tell you gives the most freakish weather on earth. There's no point in breeding for a certain month because you never know what you're going to get anyways. We were in t-shirts this time last year, and now we can't find enough winter wear. Also, we have a brand new baby so we're all losing our minds with lack of sleep, lack of money, and a five year old that just can't adjust. Three days after she was born we had twenty kids hit the ground and we haven't regained all of our sanity yet. the guy we bought the goats from said they hadn't been bred yet, but was apparently wrong. We don't have a barn with heat, but we do have plenty of heat mats (used for pigs) and keep a constant watch on our goats when we know they're due. We run a herd of forty meat goats that we don't just depend on for extra money. We have a family of four and my husband is the only one who works for $8 an hour. Trust me, if we could afford to have kids one or two months a year we would. I would love nothing more than to be able to treat them all like babies, but it just can't be done. If we wanted pets we would have only bought five. But when you get into livestock for profit you don't do it. I do what I have time for and keep the best care we can afford available. I'm glad you have an opinion and feel free to share it, but when you want to go insulting someone without knowing about where they're coming from maybe you should stop and think first. Some people don't do things your way but that doesn't make it wrong. I'd love nothing more than to write a whole book on why what happened was just an accident, nothing more, and why it happened etc.,etc.,etc., but I'm sure most wouldn't care because they know stuff just sometimes happens. So if anyone feels the need to discuss this more, please feel free to email me. I check it regularly between nap time and would love nothing more than to get into a discussion about it. loveboergoats@yahoo.com |

Annie ytou diddn't get on my last nerve it's just because i don't like peolpe thinking that they know better I live with one!!! Look i find winter babies do well off then spring/summer babies yes it is warmer there but my barn is so warm and they have every thing they need to keep warm (we have over 2 feet of straw for them to lay on) You said i put money first well you are wrong!!! I just got all new stuff fro them : wall brush, Heated water bucket, etc I do care for them. I care for them alot and hate when peopel think im mean. I breed when they come in heat so it's up to them not me. I don't give shots for them to come in heat. The last thnig is GFOATS IN THE WILD LIVE IN THE ALPINES! Hi Cheryl; I really appreciated hearing form you. It is nice to know there are some breeders who take pride in what they do and do it right. That's the whole thing. If you're going to do something- do it right. You benifit from it and so do your animals. Thumbs up to you ! Do you have a site where I could see your babies? |

Hi Annie, Don't worry about offending people it is ok to ask questions! I am one of those who breed to have winter babies, but I am also set up for it.I live in Eastern Washington and we get below 0 weather here at least 2 times a winter for 1-3 weeks at a time. Why do I like winter kids, many reasons. The kids don't contend with worms, flies, or other bugs thus making it easier on their system. My kids receive more attention in the winter as I have more time, thus making my kids raised on does super friendly. Also my kids are able to be on pasture sooner than others, thus letting them grow bigger and faster then kids born later. This brings in a bigger market for me. I however am set up for them. I have sweaters for all the kids (started that one this year) a well insulated barn (my walls are 4inches thick, made of all 2x4's) always bedded deeply in straw, a heat lamp is provided, this keeps my barn nice and warm. So far I haven't lost a kid to cold or had frozen ears, Knock on wood (hope I don't jinx myself) I have had a 100% kidded rate so far this season and we have had 19 kids born so far from 8 does. I prefer to only allow my does to kid once a year though. I raise Boers. Yep, Boers do great in the cold. There are many nights I find the herd sleeping outside instead of the barns.I do know when my does are due, but I did have 1 doe kid a month away from what I expected. I would love to share pictures with you of our setup and frisky herd. Again, don't be afraid to ask questions! Hope I have answered some of your questions. I'm not a Freak, Alex. I just have more love and concern for the animals and money comes in next. It's all about the $ that anyone would put their animals at risk. If you live where it is cold and want to drop kids in the dead of winter it would be highly fesaible to have a birthing room,(closed in stall) with some sort of heater to make the doe more comfortable when her due time arrives. I don't have any goats right now as I am having work done on my pasture and reseeded but have had goats in the past and will again in the near future. If I touched a nerve maybe you should make some changes. |

Well Annie Dairy breeders like me breed early so that we may have a chance of breeding our does in the fall and also the older they are the better for show so we can get into as many shows as we can. Meat breeders (and i must say some) run there buck with does so you don't have to run 20 does into the buck every day. As for them dieing we go and check out on them all the time so we loose only a few due to death in birth but the mother usely cleans them and gets them dry. And if the mother doesn't another older doe will lick them clean. As for you i think that you don't know much about goats and get mad at you for thinking we are mean will i say GO READ A GOAT BOOK YOU FREAK!!!! I will not have some one say i am mean for breeding for Jan - Feb goats. And most breeders that run bucks in are in texas so they don't get that cold. So i say get a life and stop calling us mean! I'm new to this site and don't want to offend any of you but why on earth would you breed so early that the kids and mothers deliver in the middle of winter? Kids can get pneumonia, loose ears or die. If you love your does and don't have a heated barn how could you do this to them? I find it very sad. If you don't have a notebook to keep all your important info in, at least put their name on the calader date they got caught. You can always go back to check to figure when she would be due. .. Again, I don't know any of you so it is not intended toward anyone special. |
