Try some Preparation H on her swollen sore hiney. Works wonders for my does. I use a cattle mineral with very good resuts, but NOTHING will have enough selenium if you are in a deficient area. You may need to do like I do and given BoSe twice a year at 1 cc per 40 pounds. Many years ago the FDA in all of its wisdom decided to highly regulate the amount of selenium that manufacturers could add to livestock feeds and supplements. Consequently nearly all of these are no longer adequate to meet the needs of animals in deficient parts of the country. Wisconsin is listed as selenium deficient. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

Sorry. I didn't notice that you said Penicillin in the first post. I will start her on it right away. Also, she does get free choice mineral with no other salt source, though it is a cattle mineral (we are trying to use up the starter bag we bought). The levels seemed pretty comparable to the goat mineral levels but maybe there is enough of a difference? |

Thanks Maggie. Yesterday afternoon the afterbirth dropped. She seems a little bit unlike her usual self but still has a good appetite - She is a first time mom so maybe that's all it is. I noticed weird swollen little bits where the vulva puckers so I got the nerve to feel inside and check her. I didn't feel any kid parts but I did notice that the swollen areas appear to be small rips. She is a smallish Boer goat and she had a single very large healthy boy. Maybe the little rips around the vulva are making her uncomfortable and that is the attitude change that I see in her? I'm thinking I should give her an antibiotic. Oxytet or Penicillin? Thanks so much Maggie! |

She is probably straining to deliver the afterbirth, which SHOULD have been passed within an hour of birth. A retained placenta like this would likely indicate a selenium or copper deficiency. You might also want to lube up and feel inside her vagina to the cervix. See if you feel a foot or something. If you do get her to a vet. A doe will stop trying to deliver if the kid won't come right and may appear to be doing fine for a few days until the dead kid makes her toxic. I have NEVER regretted going in to see if there is another kid after a single birth. Start her on penicillin to as the hanging afterbirth is a highway for bacteria into her uterus. It can also make peeing a bit uncomfortable and that may be part of her straining. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

One of our does delivered a single kid about 8:30 last night. We waited around for a good while afterwards - It was really cold so we took him in and got him dried off and warm, brought him back to mom, watched him nurse again. Both seemed fine and normal. We didn't notice her having any more contractions or pushing after he was out. Now this morning there is dangling tissue. We did not see the afterbirth pass last night so I was assuming that's what it was - except she seems to be straining now and then to push it out. Just wondering if this is normal behavior over 12 hours after the delivery? Should I be worried about another kid inside? She ate her breakfast normally this morning and seems pretty attentive to her kid. |
