Hi Linda, You say thrashing around, does this mean he is laying down and paddling his feet??? What are the temps on everyone? Do you have CD Antitoxin on hand? To treat bloat you need to give milk of magnesia (yes this will keep the diarrhea), and 1 cc penicillin orally and 1 cc penicillin injection.Repeat injection of penicillin for 3 days. Diarrhea is the way that the body rids the system of toxins. I have sweaters on any kid that shows signs of being cold. We are dipping to 20 below 0 at night and during the day we are about 18 above. I have 1 month old kids and 2 week old kids, doing good. I also have my barn heavily bedded down with straw. Let us know asap on the temps. Cheryl CPR Boer Goats 39 Strong and Growing |

I am hoping to change my luck by breeding later in the year and enclosing my barn. I hope things get better for ya soon!!!!!! |

I hsve always found vegetable oil works better for relieving bloat. Then give baking soda for the acidosis. The veg oil breaks up th bubles holding the gas much better than baking soda does. |

Linda, I am dealing with month old bottle babies right now in Hawaii. Not as cold here, but last night one had a bad case of colic. (I'm feeding Land O Lakes non-medicated goats milk.) He's about 10 lbs and I gave him 5 cc's of PeptoBismal After about 25 minutes he seemed to relax a bit. I kept him inside about 2 hours to watch. He had no dinner that night and only half as much breakfast bottle. By lunch he was OK. If really too cold, you can give them a very warm bath, dry with blow dryer. Good luck. The first few weeks are hardest. |

Linda, you can give your little goaty the baking soda...what kind of milk replacer are you using? Hopefully not one that has soy of any type in it. Soy always makes them bloat sooner or later. Yes, tallow is animal fat....beef, pork, etc. Best regards, GP Gary Pfalzbot, GoatWorld

Linda, sorry to hear things are going bad there with the weather. Here on the plains it's not much better...last I looked it was down to about -14 and the wind is howling from the north making it even colder. I've been lucky so far (knock on my wooden head) but I've had the Nuflor handy for anyone who shows even the slightest sign of being off. Unfortunately the weather isn't looking good for at least up until Friday so it's going to be a long haul I'm afraid. Please keep us posted on everything and know that we are here to help because I know I won't be going out anywhere or for at least very long at a time. Best regards, GP Gary Pfalzbot, GoatWorld

In the past 2 days I have lost 5 bottle babies due to the extreme cold. Even though we have heated barn and heat lamps. The ones remaining are all in our house now and they all have scours and one in particular has what I call colic where he is very tight bellied and flopping around. I have given some baking soda to him and keeping him standing up, please help. I will be up all night with all of them. |
